Safely Surrendered Baby Program
Free training and resources for California’s Safely Surrendered Baby Program
What is the California Safely Surrendered Baby Law?
The California Safely Surrendered Baby Law allows a parent to safely surrender an infant up to 72 hours old, confidentially and without fear of prosecution—no questions asked. This lifesaving law prevents the tragedy of infant abandonment by offering a safe alternative. Babies can be surrendered at designated staffed locations, such as hospitals or fire stations, where trained personnel will ensure the infant receives proper care.

How do I surrender an infant?
If you are a parent or person with lawful custody considering surrendering an infant, the SSB Law allows you to do so safely within 72 hours of birth. Here’s how:
-
Go to a Designated Location
Find any staffed hospital, fire station, or other location displaying SSB signage.
-
Hand the Infant to Staff
A trained professional will be there to receive your infant. The infant will receive immediate medical care.
-
Provide Information (Optional)
You may share medical history to help the infant, but this is not required.
-
Know Your Rights
Staff will provide information about the process.
